THE COMEDIAN'S WIFE

I am the comedian’s wife

But it is he that is the trouble and strife

I complained the other day that he took me for granted

Oh he said looking perplexed

Well he said why don't you go and make me a sandwich and a nice cup of tea

and we can sit down and discuss it.

Once he was young and mad and daft

Now after forty years there's no more laughs

I said he treated me like part of the furniture

He said if I can just tilt you back a bit then I can vacuum under your legs

Out in the world he is the life and soul he boasts

These days at home his is best morose

I have a dressmakers dummy which stands in my workroom

He says that he sometime thinks it is me standing there

But he always knows it isn't, the dressmakers dummy is more responsive

As you can see he has turned into a beast

But as long as he is out working I am left in peace

I asked him what his act is like nowadays

He said it’s so dirty that even the most powerful anti-bacterial cleaner can't deal with it

The story is common a story well known

As the his energy lessons he becomes an empty shell

He said that being married to me was like a life sentence

What I said you feel imprisoned

No he said but you haven't stooped talking in forty years.

But if all this seems desperate, depressing and sad

I love him really because he is not actually that bad
