An Interesting Proposition

The Mews Study

Some call it the good fight, most don’t

AN INTERESTING PROPOSITION

In the playroom

They were playing, who can throw the teddy nearest the pot

Nearest to the pot, one point

Teddy in the pot loses two points

Not a game for the Steiff

Where was Fitzroy

We want Fitzroy, we want Fitzroy

The cry went out, we we we we we (giggle giggle) want Fitzroy

A knock on the door

Was Fitzroy saved from the game, yes he was

It was Mum

Fitzroy, your fur needs a brush up for this

We have an important visitor downstairs

With an interesting proposition

Kids, you won’t be seeing Fitzroy for a while

Carry on

But don’t use the Steiff

On entering the study there was the familiar face of Dad

Fitzroy’s comrade in arms

He spoke

Sit down Fitzroy, let me explain

The local party have asked me to stand for Parliament

Frankly, I’m much too busy

Thought of you

This is the local party Chairperson

Fitzroy scrutinised the local party Chairperson

Charming, principled, and courteous or

A two-faced, double-dealing, cynical, self-serving opportunist

Welcome to politics

He grabbed his paw warmly with both hands

Welcome to politics

Taking his silence as an expression of doubt

The Chairman outlined his plan

You will have speechwriters

Speech givers even

Strategists to plot your political rise

You will be something new, refreshing

There is a whole agenda about how society relates with kids and play

Toys rights, teddies rights, dollies rights

Things need saying

But not just by anyone from the toy community

From you Fitzroy

Fitzroy could almost hear the returning officer

And hereby elected as Member of Parliament for this borough

Is Fitzroy Bear

Was he dreaming, was he slightly concussed

A collision with the pot perhaps

After all, the vicious brat from next door had come to play

So Fitzroy, he said, is it the pot or the Houses of Parliament

With barely disguised impatience, is it the pot or the House

Decide Fitzroy, decide

Fitzroy sat back, perhaps already taking a politicians stance

You will have an answer, but not tonight

You will have an answer

But only when the circumstances are right.
