Good Days, Bad Days...

Make writing a daily habit is, I think, good advice

But then there are good days and bad days

Like a runner in training

Some days running is like floating on air

Other days, the legs feel like lead

And for no obvious reason

Start fresh, end tired, start tired, end fresh, is often the case

But anyway, back to writing

For me, a good days writing is when ideas flow

One story transforms into another

Different scenarios jostle to join the story

I come up with phrases or passages of text that I like

And then there are the bad days…

However, judging days as good or bad is not very useful or necessary

Best to just let things develop each day, without judgement

Of course, decisions do have to be made as to what is in and what is out, but that’s a different thing and part of the bigger picture

Having said that, on ‘bad days’ what do I do

Most often I review existing stories

Review them for feel and style and perhaps make a few changes here and there

Or look for one that is incomplete and see if I can move it on

I try to imagine I am reading somebody else’s work

What to make of it, what changes would I make if I was writing it (which of course I am)

Sometimes ‘bad days’ turn into ‘good days’

Sometimes ‘good days’ end up as ‘bad days’ when reviewing the output

Then sometimes there are days off, which I’m not sure about

Sometimes, when travelling, or with other pressing matters to deal with, no writing days occur

But other than that, I look to maintain the discipline

As final points

I enjoy this approach, it works for me and I find it productive for the Fitzroy project

If that was no longer the case, then I would need to think again

There are many ways of working after all…
